The Government of the State of Chihuahua, in collaboration with the Guachochi City Council, has launched the Ro'chí Aquarium , a landmark facility for the region. Its name comes from the Rarámuri word ro'chí , meaning "fish," and it stands as the first aquarium in the state's history, as well as the second in all of northern Mexico. The main objective of this space is to educate new generations about the fragility and biological richness of the Sierra Tarahumara ecosystems, while also promoting the conservation of endemic species.
Located in the heart of the Magical Town of Guachochi, the facility aims to connect visitors with local biodiversity in an educational and entertaining way. Unlike traditional commercial aquariums, this one prioritizes the fauna of the mountain canyons and rivers, offering a unique experience for those who come to discover it.
A refuge for endemic species
The Ro'chí Aquarium is notable for housing over 600 animals belonging to 53 different species . Among its main exhibits are the Tarahumara axolotl and various salamanders, all under strict monitoring and conservation protocols. Visitors can also see specimens of wild rainbow trout, bred and protected in coordination with local fish farms. The aquarium also features terrestrial fauna and reptiles such as frogs, rattlesnakes, chameleons, and tarantulas native to the Sierra Madre mountains.
Modern and sustainable infrastructure
The facility has all the necessary federal and state permits for wildlife management. Its operation is overseen by veterinary specialists and marine biologists, ensuring animal welfare. Guided tours are limited to 30 people at a time, guaranteeing a high-quality educational experience.
Engine for ecotourism development
The Ministry of Tourism and Mayor José Miguel Yáñez have highlighted that the Ro'chí Aquarium required a joint investment of 17.5 million pesos to boost nature tourism in Guachochi. This facility is part of the Pies Ligeros Tourist Corridor, which aims to extend the stay of national and international tourists in the Sierra Madre Occidental by incorporating new extreme and nature-based experiences.
The Ro'chí Aquarium is now open to the public from Thursday to Sunday, from 13:00 PM to 19:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased directly at the aquarium's ticket office, offering a unique opportunity to discover the region's natural wealth.
